DON'T FENCE ME IN

A 1916 advertisement for a Wyoming woman librarian says, "Must be able to get along with Western people, ride and drive, as well as pack a horse, follow a trail, shoot straight, run an automobile, and be able to rough it whenever necessary!"

That spirit is still out there. Meet a group of today's Wyoming women and girls. As diverse as they are distinct. 13 vibrant stories from the heart of Wyoming.

In January, 2007, the Equipoise Fund invited people in Wyoming to nominate women and girls whose stories they found inspiring for our "Celebrating Women and Girls in Wyoming" film project. More than 150 nominations came in from women and men all over the state. They nominated their neighbor, their student, their grandmother, and women they did not know personally, whose stories had impressed them.

Our purpose is to produce a documentary film where women and girls across Wyoming can speak their truth as they tell their stories of their individual talents; of sustaining their family, their ranch, their community; of living in the landscapes of Wyoming, leading vibrant lives of their own making.

We will look at a variety of women and girls: a 92-year-old who still skis and backpacks into the wilderness, and who still fights social injustice; a country doctor who still makes house calls; a young Arapaho woman who is carving out an inspiring path; a single mother who moved her family out of poverty and now works in the cutting-edge field of wind energy development; a high school student who spoke to the United Nations; a scientist who discovered remains of the largest land animal that ever walked the Earth; a harp musician; a cowgirl poet; and more.

They will tell their own stories, accentuated by scenes of where they live - their towns, homes, and the Wyoming landscape surrounding them and influencing their lives.

Our hope is that the stories in our film will make Wyoming women and girls visible -- so that other women and girls will be inspired, and so that women's and girls' important roles in the life of our state will be valued as they deserve.

The film will premiere in spring 2008 at an event hosted by Equality Initiatives.
